Tena Stivicic - In a Dream Dreamt by Another
National Theatre Studio, London - February 2009
Supported by the Arts Council of England

Conceived and directed by Douglas Rintoul
Choreographed and co-directed by Darren Johnston
Written by Tena Stivicic

“…migration is like an event dreamt by another. As a figure in a dream dreamt by an unknown sleeper, he appears to act autonomously, at times unexpectedly; but everything he does – unless he revolts – is determined by the needs of the dreamer’s mind. Abandon the metaphor. The migrant’s intentionality is permeated by historical necessities of which neither he nor anybody he meets is aware.  This is why it is as if his life were being dreamt by another”. John Berger – The Seventh Man

Following a period of research & development at the National Theatre Studio in January 2008, funded by the Arts Council England and the Royal National Theatre, this project is now entering its second stage of development before a full realisation of the project in 2009/10.

Directed by Douglas Rintoul and the choreographer Darren Johnston, "In a Dream Dreamt by Another" looks at the contemporary phenomenon of mass migration to Britain. By interweaving a number of narratives of migration (historical and contemporary) the piece is an urgent exploration of globalisation and, as a consequence, shifting notions of identity and culture.
