| Douglas Henshall interviewed by Ben Shepherd on GMTV - Friday May 8th 2009 Ben Shepherd : Dougie (Henshall) is here to talk about his new film French Film. We’re going to come to Primeval Dougie. ..................You’ve left them to battle on their own . Douglas Henshall : Yes. I’m upset about that. But we’ll come to that . Okay. Let’s talk about French Film, which I got to see last night. It’s a wonderful British comedy and in a great sense of things. It’s definitely a film try and explain a little about the French part of it. I think the idea of French Film is that everybody has their idea about what love should be like and if that’s what you’ve got with your partner then that’s fab, but if it turns out that’s maybe that’s not quite what you’ve got with your partner then you kind of wish that it was maybe another way, the way it is in certain French movies, or the way the French talk about it then what do you do? You’re kind of in trouble and it’s a little bit of what happens when two couples, four people come to the conclusion that maybe they’re not with the right people after all and maybe the French are the people who know how to do it properly. There’s a wonderful character played by Eric Cantona. Thierry Grimandi. Isn’t he just the best? It’s fascinating really he’s sitting there with his French floppy hair and his Gallic flair. Did you get to meet him? No, I didn’t actually, which I think was probably kind of just as well for the both of us. Apparently he’s not that keen to talk about football and I don’t think I would have been able to meet him and actually not talk to him about football. He’s one of those kind of people I kind of quite idolise. But the thing though is all that charisma he kind of had on the football field, he’s got that in front of the camera he’s got such kind of charm about him. He’s fab. Isn’t that a bit annoying as an actor? You kind of think, ‘He’s a footballer. He shouldn’t be good at this .' Ach, no, ‘cos there’s plenty of other people who’ve been footballers who’ve tried their hand at it and you go ‘ Oh come on, there you go, that’s how you mess it up’. And it’s nice to actually see somebody and kind of go ‘There you go, that’s how it’s done properly.’ A scene from French Film is shown (described by Ben as a cringing moment) in which Marcus (Douglas Henshall) gives Sophie (Anne-Marie Duff) a ring, as shown in the above pictures. Asclin Ditta, who wrote French Film, I think that was actually taken from one of his experiences. Did you learn any lessons or any helpful tips from the French or Eric Cantona? No, but I did learn not to give rings to people unless you’re going to tell them beforehand what it’s about! Primeval now though. Go on then For heaven’s sake. How on earth did that happen? I don’t know. Careless I think. Careless yes, to lose your wife for eight years is fine, but to let her come back and shoot you is something else altogether really isn’t it ??!!.............................I had to have a kind of dramatic ending one way or another, and I think maybe I’d preferred to have been eaten, rather than have been shot. Yeah you’d been fighting all those dinosaurs, but never actually got eaten by one! It’s been a fantastic phenomenal success. Yeah, I still watch it on a Saturday night. Has it kind have maintained that sort of excitement from you. Is it kind of I’ve done done three series now and thought’ Okay I’m ready to go on or Cutter’s ready to go on? No, I’ve never done anything for that length of time before and I eventually kind of felt I don’t want to get boring doing this. I think Jason Flemyng’s done such a great job since he came in and I think the show now has got a great whole other momentum. I keep watching it. I’m slightly annoyed because I don’t think they miss me at all you know. There are some rumours that it’s very expensive to make. ITV is struggling at the moment that it might not come back for another series. Is that anything that you guys had heard of? No, I don’t really know. I finished on Primeval a year ago, so I don’t really know. I hope not. I hope that’s not true. It would be a shame ‘cos it’s filled a great spot on Saturday nights. (Douglas Henshall agrees. ) Dougie, lovely to see you as ever. Best of luck with French Film. I can highly recommend it, there are some lovely scenes just like that one we just saw. |
