Douglas Henshall attends the Go Greener Family Fun Festival in Barrhead, East Renfrewshire on July 11th 2009.
Douglas Henshall visited Barrhead’s first ever Go Greener Family Fun Festival which took place on Saturday July 11th 2009. The purpose of the Day was to promote health and environment messages. Dougie grew up in Barrhead and East Renfrewshire Council’s environment convener, Councillor Eddie Phillips said he was delighted that one of Barrhead's most famous sons, Dougie Henshall, agreed to join them for the Go Greener Family Day, stating that "He is a well respected actor and is a credit to his town and we look forward to welcoming him " Eddie Phillips, said that The Go Greener Family Day was all about fun and laughter but backed with some environmental and health messages. "By getting together we can all make a difference to our local environment and improve the health of our communities. " The event was organised by Go Greener's founder member and marketing worker, Shona Lewendon who has sent exclusive pictures and a report about the day to this website.

Shona presented Dougie with a signed St Mirren Football, A Go Greener T shirt (personalised with 'Borrheid Boy'), a book about Barrhead (coincidently Dougie's Grandfather is actually pictured in it.!), a 'Houses of Parliament' bottle of wine (courtesy of Secretary of State for Scotland Jim Murphy), a 'Barrhead Oscar' and keeping with the ECO theme, a couple of Go Barrhead & Go Greener re-useable bags to take his gifts home in (which he insists will be well used in his house!). She says that the event was a huge success and that Dougie was at the event for the whole day (over 4 hours!). He posed for countless pictures, some of which you can see here and signed hundreds of autographs.

Douglas Henshall has said he would be very keen to be involved in any future events, as he believes that the work Go Greener does is important. He said “I had a great time and it was a real treat to come home and to be welcomed so warmly. Thank you for asking me to be part of your family day and if there is anything I can do for Go Greener in the future, I will be happy to help.” The Go Greener website provides information about how we can all make global changes locally.

The volunteers of Oxfam Newton Mearns jumped at the chance to participate in the Go Greener event and meeting Dougie was a surprise bonus. “This year Oxfam is campaigning to raise awareness of the global impact of climate change. Go Greener is making people more aware of their environmental responsibilities so in many ways we share similar goals. We were so pleased that Dougie was able to spend some time on our bookstall. He certainly helped to boost our sales. We raised enough money to buy 175 trees to provide food and help prevent soil erosion in Ethiopia. Maybe we should invite Dougie to become a regular volunteer in the shop. He’d be welcome any day!” Caricaturist, Edd Travers was also participating at the event. Edd managed to draw a caricature of Dougie whilst he was chatting to some people nearby his stall earlier in the day." I managed to knock out a quick doodle of him (in about 10 minutes) from afar.” says Edd , "Later in the afternoon, I was lucky enough to be introduced to him, so I passed on my handiwork. Dougie was very kind, a super nice fellah." Shona added that Dougie's patience & generosity throughout the entire day was truly amazing, nothing was too much to ask of him! He even went into a smoke filled laser quest inflatable for a laser battle!!!!
