When a strikingly beautiful but naïve young Dorian (Ben Barnes) arrives in Victorian London he is swept  into a social whirlwind by the charismatic Henry Wotton (Colin Firth), who introduces Dorian to the hedonistic pleasures of the city.  Henry’s friend, society artist Basil Hallward (Ben Chaplin) paints a portrait of Dorian to capture the full power of his youthful beauty and when it’s unveiled Dorian makes a flippant pledge: he would give anything to stay as he is in the picture - even his soul.

As he descends further into a debauched and corrupt existence, Dorian is haunted by his portrait which begins to age and morph, reflecting his moral decline. Forced by his own evil actions, Dorian flees the country, returning 25 years later. But will he get one last chance for redemption and escape with his life?

Gray tells of a corrupt young man who somehow keeps his youthful beauty eternally, but a special painting gradually reveals his inner ugliness to all.

Parker told Teletext: "It's going for the horror-thriller angle of the story. It's different to adapting one of Wilde's plays."

According to producer Barnaby Thompson, "the idea is to give it a sexy, contemporary feel but still doing it in period."
