| INTERVIEW WITH ANTHONY HOROWITZ
THE CREATOR AND WRITER What originally inspired you to create a complex drama like Collision? I spend a lot of time on the A12, on the way to Suffolk, and I often think about all these huge machines roaring past each other, and how easy it would be for my life to change-or even end-in a matter of seconds. Every journey is a story, and by its very nature, a collision is when life and death are seen at their most stark. Collision features the biggest car crash ever filmed for British TV. When you wrote it, did you have any doubts about how this could be brought back to the small screen? I was very shocked to discover that there wasn’t a single dual carriageway in the country where it would be possible to film the crash! This had never occurred to me at the time. In the end, the producers had to construct a length of road of their own, complete with a crash barrier and surrounding vegetation. This was then carefully blended with shots of a real dual carriageway to create the perfect illusion. But for a short time, the whole series was touch and go. Were you pleased with the casting? I was thrilled by the casting – the entire cast is hugely impressive. This was down to the choice of director Marc Evans, who has built a great reputation in feature films. A lot of talented actors want to work with him. Of course, you’re also an enormously popular children’s author. Have you got any new books out in the future? My next Alex Rider book, Crocodile Tears, comes out the same week as Collision airs on ITV1. I’m not sure if this is good or terrible timing! I’m not sure what I’ll write next - I’m thinking.
