| SYNOPSIS Episode 5 Jane Tarrant (Lucy Griffiths) is in emotional turmoil, caught between her fiancé Dave Brown (Matt Ryan) and the burgeoning romance with rich businessman Richard Reeves (Paul McGann). Dave still wants to marry Jane, but she knows she wants more to life than marriage to him can offer. And Richard is urging her to run away with him. Richard lies to his wife, Angela (Victoria Wicks), telling her he is going away on business. But she knows Richard is seeing someone and confronts him. Angela doesn’t think he has the guts to leave everything behind. Brian Edwards (Phil Davis) is a haunted man; his secret is catching up with him. When he arrives home and Christine (Jan Francis) informs him that the police want to talk to him he can lie no longer and tells her everything. The man who has been impersonating James Taylor, Ben Hickman (Richard Harrington), fears his life is in danger when the same drug that was found by Karen’s body, is sent to him in the post. Ben Hickman is a disgruntled employee of HDC, sacked after stealing from them. But Ben knew about the super-enriched pesticides HDC was exporting to Africa. He needed Karen’s help to get the proof to expose them. He approaches Detective Inspector John Tolin for help. But Tolin knows Hickman is lying and tells him he is on his own. Tolin is determined to find the documents Karen Donnelly downloaded from her boss’s computer which she was so concerned about after the accident. But a search of her flat draws a blank. At the newspaper office the real James Taylor tells Tolin that there are strong rumours that the African government is using chemical warfare against its people - super-enriched pesticides supplied by HDC. Ann discovers disturbing news about Sidney Norris (David Bamber) from his previous employers at a private school. The headmaster tells Ann (Kate Ashfield), that Sidney was forced to resign after two boys accused him of indecent behaviour. Tolin and Ann track down Sidney’s internet friend, Ed (Brian Pettifer), via the information on Sidney’s computer. But when they approach him, Ed confesses all. Tolin and Ann fear the worst, but to their surprise, almost the opposite is true. Tolin realises that the documents Karen Donnelly downloaded must be on a memory stick on her key fob. He doesn’t want Karen to have died in vain and gives the stick to James Taylor so he can expose HDC. The investigation is over, loose ends all tied up, but the cause of the multiple vehicle pile up is still unresolved....until something catches Ann’s eye and suddenly it all becomes clear what led to the carnage. |
