| SYNOPSIS Episode 4 Jeffrey Rampton (Craig Kelly) and his wife Sandra (Zoe Telford) are being quizzed by police after the grisly discovery of a body in a secret compartment of Daniel Rampton’s van. The couple both deny any knowledge of what Daniel (Dean Lennox Kelly) had been doing and Tolin (Douglas Henshall) is forced to release them. But he arranges to keep them under surveillance. At home Sandra demands that Jeffrey tells her everything, and is astounded to find out that they were trying to smuggle someone into the country. She knows if Daniel is found that the middle class life she has worked so hard to attain will be lost forever. She decides to take charge of the situation and pays a visit to Derek (Frank Harper) at the vehicle maintenance yard. She refuses to be intimidated by Derek and threatens to report him to the police unless he agrees to help her to get Daniel out of the country. Christine Edwards (Jan Francis) is suffering sleepless nights, tormented by guilt over the death of her mother. She wants to know why her husband Brian (Phil Davis) was on the A12 that evening when he shouldn’t have been there at all. Brian admits he was wanting to show Joyce (Sylvia Syms) a nursing home she liked so they could finally have their lives back. But it appears he is not telling the whole truth. Jane (Lucy Griffiths) has another date with Richard (Paul McGann) at a private art exhibition. The paintings on show are worth millions, and Jane is shocked to find that Richard owns a number of them. Richard can’t get enough of her company, and wants to take her to the best restaurant in town. But she insists on lunch on her own terms: a picnic on Hampstead Heath. Overlooking London, Jane shows Richard a new way of looking at the world, and for the first time they kiss. But their secret liaison is in danger of being revealed when her fiancé Dave (Matt Ryan) begins to suspect Jane is lying to him. Tolin is determined to establish why Karen Donnelly (Claire Rushbrook) died and returns to interview her boss about why she left work early the day of the collision. He and Ann (Kate Ashfield) are also trying to track James Taylor (Richard Harrington) who Karen was due to meet on the day of the collision. They had found newspaper articles written by James Taylor about atrocities in East Africa. His old landlord shows them an ID pass he found in James’ room, which leads them to the newspaper office where he works. But when they finally get to meet James Taylor – it is not the same man. Someone has been impersonating him. The release from prison of Harry Canwell (Ben Crompton) opens up old wounds for Tolin. Harry killed Tolin’s wife and paralysed his daughter in a car accident, when Harry was drunk after a Christmas party. The two men meet and Harry begs for Tolin’s forgiveness. Ann and Tolin are also trying to discover the truth about Sidney Norris (David Bamber). The only lead they can find is Sidney’s computer, and they arrange to collect it from his landlady, Mrs Whitfield (Di Botcher). From a distance they are being watched by Ed, Sid’s internet friend, and after they leave Ed knocks on Mrs Whitfield’s door. He wants to retrieve some discs he loaned to Sid, but Mrs Whitfield won’t let him in. |
