Episode 3

Daniel Rampton (Dean Lennox Kelly) is still on the run after the accident. He arranges to meet his brother and tells him that he needs money to get a passport and leave the country. Jeffrey (Craig Kelly) wants to help, but cash is short and he is trying to keep the truth from his wife Sandra (Zoe Telford).

But when Ann Stallwood (Kate Ashfield) later interviews Jeffrey and Sandra, about why Daniel would have abandoned the van, Sandra is beginning to suspect that he and his brother have been up to something.

The doctors are fighting to save Joyce Thompson’s (Sylvia Syms) life, to no avail. Christine Edwards (Jan Francis) is devastated by her mother’s death, and blames herself for letting husband Brian (Phil Davis) take Joyce for a drive. Christine is also angry that Brian walked away from the accident, almost without a scratch.

Single mum Naomi (Alma Eno) is anxiously awaiting the arrival of her husband Tsegga (Cornelius Macarthy). He calls her as he is about to travel to England from Holland to be with her and their new born son. But Naomi then hears nothing.

Worried that something has happened to Tsegga Naomi goes to the vehicle repair yard where she was brought when she first came to England. But Derek (Frank Harper), the man in charge, refuses to answer her questions about her husband, and sends her away.

Naomi doesn’t know what to do. She wants to go to the police, but she cannot report her husband missing. Tsegga was taking the same illegal route into the UK as she had done.

Detective Inspector John Tolin (Douglas Henshall) is told by his boss, Detective Chief Inspector Stephen Maitland (Christopher Fulford) that he is off the case. Alice Jackson’s father has dropped his lawsuit and the Deputy Commander Donald Fraser (Pip Torrens) is happy. But Tolin doesn’t want to be reassigned; there is more evidence that needs to be uncovered, not just for the victims, but also for himself, Maitland gives him three more days.

When Tolin arrives home his daughter Jodie breaks the news to him that she has applied for a place at Edinburgh University. Tolin is worried that the university is too far away and that he won’t be there to help her. But Jodie, is insistent she needs to move on with her life.

Jane Tarrant (Lucy Griffiths) has a secret date with Richard Reeves (Paul McGann) in a posh bar, but immediately gets cold feet and tries to leave. She admits she is engaged to Dave, but Richard is not fazed and confesses that he is married. For the first time Jane feels like she has met someone she can talk to about her dreams. Richard finds her irresistible, and already he wants to see her the next day. Jane tries to turn him down but she’s smitten.

Karen Donnelly (Claire Rushbrook) is found dead in her flat. It looks like suicide, but for Tolin there are too many discrepancies that are being over looked. He is sure that she did not kill herself and with time running out on the case, he needs help.

James Taylor (Richard Harrington), the journalist Karen was due to meet on the day of the collision, knows that the net is closing in on him. As he leaves his rented accommodation, he gets into a violent fight with his landlord when he doesn’t pay his rent.

The forensic investigation, led by Guy Pearson (Nicholas Farrell), uncovers shocking new evidence: Daniel Rampton’s van had been altered to conceal a secret compartment. As they remove the compartment the body of Tsegga is revealed.

There’s also evidence to prove that Joyce had been wearing her seatbelt at the moment of the collision. She should never have sustained the injuries that she did.
